“Supergirl” | Season 1 | Episode 1 –“Pilot” | CBS | Monday at 8:00 PM, EST
“Supergirl” is a hit. “Supergirl” is the newest comic book heroine to come to the little screen, thanks to CBS. It’s fresh and refreshing. It’s all about the unassuming girl next door kicking butt and taking names in her downtime. You have to love it, especially “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fans. A small difference is the musical soundtrack. You would never hear retro funkadelic soul playing on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. The song “She’s a Bad Mama Jama” by Carl Carlton summed up Supergirl’s arrival.
The new series begins with young Kara Zor-El (Malina Weissman) being sent to Earth to watch over her baby cousin Kal-El, no other than Superman himself. Things go awry. Instead, she’s caught up in a planetary drama which detains her for twenty-four years. When her space pod finally breaks away, Kara Zor-El is not alone. She doesn’t find out until she is an adult. Actress Melissa Benoist plays the role as the adult Kara Zor-El, known as Kara Danvers. Kara Danvers is sweet and quirky, reminiscent of a young Buffy.
Kara Danvers works as an aspiring journalist at The Tribune, a rival newspaper to The Daily Planet. Calista Flockhart nearing stole the show as her media boss lady Cat Grant. Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen sealed Supergirl’s introduction into the diverse population of the 21st century. Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) is the quintessential guy friend in the adjoining cubicle. Her older sister Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) has a little surprise of her own. All of the supporting characters are interesting and mysterious.
Sadly, Buffy isn’t around anymore. The good news is Kara Zor-El is here now. There is much to love about “Supergirl” and plenty of baddies to keep fans coming back for more. It is going to be a real treat watching “Supergirl” develop into a super woman. Supergirl really is a “Bad Mama Jama.”
